Sustainability in practice - Why Product Longevity Matters for the Planet

The most sustainable product is the one that lasts. At Earthlings, we design sustainable kids products that are made to endure, be repaired, and return safely to nature. By focusing on product longevity, we reduce waste, conserve resources, and help families make choices that protect the planet our children will inherit.

The problem with throwaway design

Many everyday products are built to be replaced. Fast-paced consumption pushes families to buy short-lived items that break easily. Each replacement requires new materials, energy, and packaging—creating a cycle of waste. When a backpack, bottle, or coat lasts for years instead of months, its impact drops significantly.

Built to last and designed to be repaired

Durability starts with design. Every item in our sustainable children’s range is made for real family life—mud, travel, and daily adventure. Strength alone is not enough. We also design for repairability: zips, straps, and fixings can be replaced; seams can be restitched; components are accessible and modular so small issues never end a product’s life. Repair extends usefulness, saves money, and teaches children the value of fixing rather than discarding.

Circular design in action

  • Selecting strong, recyclable, and non-toxic materials.
  • Avoiding mixed or bonded materials that prevent recycling.
  • Designing for disassembly and easy repair.
  • Sharing care and repair guidance for every product.

These choices keep resources in circulation and support circular design. Our eco-friendly family travel gear is built to be reused, repaired, or safely recycled at end of life.

A better relationship with what we own

Durable, repairable design changes behaviour. Families who choose long-lasting items tend to buy less and value more. Passing products on teaches children respect—for their possessions and for the planet. Longevity supports responsibility as well as sustainability.

Our commitment

All Earthlings products follow our Circular Design Code. We use pure or recycled materials, reject single-use plastics, and design everything to be reused, repaired, or recycled. We never fly finished goods and we manufacture as locally as possible to lower transport emissions.

Join the movement

By choosing repairable, sustainable kids products, families help reshape the system and protect the world future generations will explore.
